This white paper presents the story of how Mellco Creative partnered with the iconic Beacon Drive-In in Spartanburg, South Carolina to craft a dynamic “History Wall” experience, blending digital visualization, storytelling and brand activation. The objective: to deepen the brand’s connection to its heritage, engage visitors in a memorable way and modernize how legacy is experienced in a local landmark. The paper outlines the problem context, the design and execution journey, outcomes/impact, key learnings, and concludes with a clear call to action for other enterprises seeking to do similar work.
Background & Opportunity
The Brand & the Place
Beacon Drive-In has operated as a Southern landmark since 1946, cultivating a reputation for generous portions, traditional curb‐service and a loyal local following. beacondrivein.com
As times change, legacy brands like Beacon face two core challenges:
- Remaining relevant to newer generations while preserving heritage
- Translating their story into immersive experiences rather than static signage
The Challenge
Mellco Creative identified that while Beacon had rich heritage and strong local recognition, its physical space lacked an interactive narrative layer. Patrons were served great food and had nostalgic memories, but there was less opportunity to pause, reflect and engage with the brand’s history in a meaningful way. The ask: how to create something “unexpected” yet authentic, that extends beyond the everyday meal experience.
The Opportunity for Innovation
Mellco Creative’s ethos of “marketing, design, visualization… untraditional to unexpected” mellcocreative.com provided the creative backbone for taking Beacon’s rich story and presenting it in a form that would:
- Invite guests to engage physically and digitally with the brand
- Amplify the heritage in a way that supports the dining experience
- Serve as a differentiator in a competitive food-service environment
Project Scope & Approach
Design Brief
Mellco Creative worked with Beacon to define a scope focused on a “History Wall” — essentially, a branded environment installation that would visualize Beacon’s timeline, iconic menu items, cultural position and community ties.
Requirements included:
- Fit within the existing Beacon interior without disrupting core food-service operations
- Blend analog (wall graphics, imagery) with digital/interactive touches (Augmented Reality or other visualization)
- Reinforce Beacon’s heritage while pointing to its future
Concept Development
Starting from conceptual sketches, Mellco Creative ideated a layered visual wall: historic photos of the drive-in, vintage menu snapshots, milestone call‐outs, customer nostalgia cues. On top of that, they proposed a digital overlay — through QR codes or AR triggers — enabling visitors to scan parts of the wall and unlock hidden layers of content: old video, founder stories, “then vs now” comparisons. This sweet spot between physical installation and digital augmentation embodies Mellco’s “visualization” strength. YouTube
Execution
- Graphics & Production: High-resolution wall graphics printed and installed in Beacon’s interior.
- Augmented Reality Implementation: AR timeline triggered by mobile scanning, revealing stories and animations directly on patron phones. (Mellco Creative shared a video titled “Beacon Timeline Wall in AR”)
- YouTube
- Integration & Launch: The wall was unveiled within the dining space, with signage directing patrons to engage, plus social media posts to drive awareness.
Key Features
- Visual timeline spanning from 1946 to present day
- Interactive AR experiences layered on top of printed wall
- Mixed media: vintage photos, menu artifacts, narrative text, brand-colours consistent with Beacon identity
- Call-outs to signature menu items and drive-in culture (sweet tea, onion rings ‘a-plenty’, etc.) aligning with Beacon’s heritage beacondrivein.com
Outcomes & Impact
Customer Engagement
By introducing a physical + digital dimension, Beacon gained a new touch-point of engagement beyond just food service. Patrons lingered to interact with the wall, took photos, shared on social media. For the brand, this added time-on-site, enhanced memorability and reinforced heritage messaging.
Brand Differentiation
In a competitive dining market, especially for drive-in style or nostalgic eateries, this installation elevated Beacon’s positioning as more than a burger joint — rather a destination with story, character and interactive depth. It aligned with Mellco Creative’s brand promise of “unexpected” design.
Heritage Preservation & Storytelling
The installation ensured that Beacon’s story was not just recalled verbally but visually anchored for future generations. It created an asset that can be referenced, shared, and even updated.
Measurable Metrics
While specific metrics weren’t publicly detailed, plausible indicators include:
- Increase in social media mentions/photos of the wall area
- Increase in dwell time within the restaurant
- Positive customer feedback referencing the wall experience
- Enhanced brand perception as measured via local surveys or online reviews
Lessons Learned
- Heritage brands can benefit from experiential installations — story alone is not enough, interaction fosters connection.
- Merging print graphics with AR/digital layers offers a cost-effective way to modernize a physical space without full immersive build-outs.
- Execution must align with operations — the installation at Beacon did not disrupt food service flow.
- Engagement needs promotion: markers, signage, staff awareness help ensure patrons notice and interact.
Strategic Implications
For other legacy brand-owners (restaurants, retail, hospitality, community
institutions), the Beacon Drive-In case offers these take-aways:
- Define your story — what unique heritage, brand moment, cultural position do you hold?
- Choose a meaningful touch-point — identify a physical space where the story can live (entrance, dining area, lobby).
- Blend analog + digital — leverage printed graphics for permanence and digital triggers (AR, QR) for dynamic interaction.
- Keep guest experience front-of-mind — ensure the installation enhances, rather than interrupts, the core service.
- Promote actively — signage, social assets, staff briefs help maximize awareness and engagement.
- Measure and iterate — capture photos, social tags, feedback; update the installation or digital layers over time to keep it fresh.
